Giants hiring Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator

One Andy Reid disciple is joining another in East Rutherford.

The New York Giants are hiring former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their new OC, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday, per sources.

Nagy, 47, joins John Harbaugh's Big Blue staff after 14 combined seasons coaching under Reid. He was most recently Reid's OC in Kansas City from 2023-25. In Harbaugh, Nagy will find a fellow traveler, as the new Giants coach began his NFL coaching career as a special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach under Reid in Philadelphia.

Harbaugh and Nagy were never on the same staff with the Eagles, but they'll spearhead the Giants offense in 2025.

Nagy's second stint in Kansas City ended this month after the team missed the postseason for the first time in 11 years and the OC's contract expired. Nagy, who was head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018-2021, sought top jobs in this year's coaching cycle, interviewing for the Cardinals, Raiders, Ravens and Titans vacancies.

With all of the HC jobs filled -- Klint Kubiak is expected to be hired as the Raiders' next head coach after his Seahawks play in Super Bowl LX on Sunday -- Nagy turned to offensive coordinator gigs. New York had an opening.

Harbaugh, who was hired earlier this month after his firing from the Ravens, had interviewed a number of OC candidates, but the Giants were expected to be interested in his former Baltimore OC, Todd Monken. When the Browns hired Monken as their next head coach earlier this month, New York moved on to other candidates, including Nagy.

Nagy spent one season with Patrick Mahomes in 2017, then a backup to Alex Smith, before attempting to turn around Mitchell Trubisky's career in Chicago. Trubisky, the No. 2 pick in the same draft as Mahomes, was a Pro Bowler in 2018 but struggled in the ensuing years, leading to Nagy's firing in 2021.

After returning to Kansas City in 2022, Nagy served as quarterbacks coach and then OC for Mahomes during their three-year stretch of Super Bowl appearances. Mahomes earned MVP honors with Nagy as his QBs coach in '22, as the Chiefs ranked No. 1 in total and scoring offense. Nagy served as the OC for Kansas City's victory in Super Bowl LVIII and run to Super Bowl LIX, where the Chiefs were blown out by the Eagles.

Kansas City's attack suffered a significant downturn in 2025, ranking 21st and 20th in scoring and total offense, respectively. That continued a stretch of statistical declines with Nagy as OC from the 2022 peak. The Chiefs brought back former OC Eric Bieniemy this offseason to replace Nagy, who will now try to ignite the career of another young QB in New York.

Jaxson Dart, an Offensive Rookie of the Year finalist, will be the greatest beneficiary from Nagy's hire in New York. The fiery signal-caller had an up-and-down first year in the NFL amid injuries and turmoil on the coaching staff. The Giants fired coach Brian Daboll, who helped draft Dart in the first round, in the middle of the season and elevated OC Mike Kafka to the interim role.

In 14 games, Dart completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. The dual-threat passer added 487 yards and nine scores on the ground. The Giants QB also struggled with concussions, a possible byproduct of his aggressive play out of the pocket.

Nagy will be tasked, as he was with Trubisky and Mahomes, with building an offense around Dart's arm and mobility but also reining in the free spirit for years to come.

Perhaps if Nagy succeeds in seeing Dart reach his first-round potential, that elusive second chance at a head coach gig will await him in the future.
