Eagles OC Kevin Patullo: We always want to be in 'attack mode'

It took falling behind, 26-7, in Week 3, but the Philadelphia Eagles finally busted out of their early-season offensive doldrums.

In the spirited 33-26 comeback win over the Los Angeles Rams, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles got aggressive, going up-tempo and slinging the ball around the park for the first time this season.

To any onlooker, the attacking approach seemed like a different offense than the one that played for the first 10 quarters of the season. However, new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo insisted the club enters every week with an attacking mentality.

"I think that's always when we go into every week, that's what we want to do," he said on Tuesday, via the team's official transcript. "We want to be the aggressive person, right? The word this past week for the offense of when I spoke to the offense was 'attack.' We want to be in attack mode and going into the game, that was what we wanted to do. The first drive was a good drive. We went for it on fourth down, we threw the ball down into the red zone at the goal lines. We were in an attack mode."

Patullo is the fourth offensive coordinator under coach Nick Sirianni. Shane Steichen (2021-22) was hired as the Indianapolis head coach. Brian Johnson (2023) struggled and was relieved of his duties. Kellen Moore (2024) took the New Orleans coaching job after lifting the Lombardi Trophy.

Is Patullo, who has never called plays, closer to Johnson or Steichen/Moore?

Through the first two weeks, the Eagles offense was a slug. The offensive line, the running game and Hurts' power propelled them to wins, but it wasn't pretty. The 3-0 Eagles have averaged just 146.7 passing yards per game over the first three games in 2025, the fourth-fewest in the NFL (two of the teams with fewer are 0-3 -- Jets, Titans; also, 2-1 Vikings). It marks the fewest passing YPG by a 3-0 team since the 2010 Steelers (139.3).

In the first half on Sunday, Philly scored seven points, had 33 total yards, -1 passing yards and four first downs. In the final two quarters, after opening things up, the Eagles scored 26 points, gained 255 total yards, 203 passing yards and 15 first downs. Hurts had three passing TDs in the second half after generating exactly zero over the first 10 quarters of the season.

The second half on Sunday showed more upside when they were willing to open things up.

The stark difference in the approach, in which Hurts got A.J. Brown heavily involved after being silent to open the campaign, led to questions about whether Philly changed play-callers at the break. Sirianni squashed that on Monday, saying that Patullo continued calling plays.

Patullo must continue that aggressive attacking approach moving forward.

"You don't go into it saying like, 'Hey, I got to be really conservative here.' That's definitely not something you want to do," he said. "I think it's just a matter of just going forward, learning from those moments and how to get ourselves out of those situations."

Patullo can't wait until the second half to get into attack mode in Week 4 against the 3-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
